C I Knock Bowls Club President Louis Arneill and Treasurer Denis McCluskey with a cheque for £2600 resulting from a fundraising effort on Presidents Day Sat 7th September in aid of Alzheimer’s Society
Thanks to everyone who helped to raise this fantastic amount for an excellent cause.
One more week and August will be gone, which sadly brings us close to the end of another outdoor season. I trust it has been an enjoyable summer despite our fair share of inclement weather.
It has been an important year of development for CI Knock, not least with the re-introduction of a Saturday B team after a number of years with only one Men’s team. How exciting to see our numbers steadily increasing, enabling the club to field another weekend team, ably assisted by a number of ladies willing to turn out for the team. Well done to those involved, and to all those who have played competitive bowls this season. This year we have welcomed 10 new members, 3 men and 7 ladies. Let’s keep the new members coming.
Another very successful Open Mixed Tournament has just been completed with 13 clubs represented and many of those participating being mixed clubs rinks. The Roberta Hughes Memorial Trophy was presented by Helen Wilson to the winning rink comprising players from Willowfield and CI Knock.
Congratulations to the winners and to all who took part and assisted in so many ways each night.
Club Finals Days are scheduled for Monday evening and all day Tuesday 2ndand 3rdSept. Please come along and support the players and remember the free BBQ which will be on Tues evening 3rdSept at approx. 5:30 p.m. following the last Final.
President’s Day is also fast approaching and will be held on Saturday 7thSept. This year I am combining the day with a Fund-Raising Effort for The Alzheimer’s Society. I commend this event and encourage you to support our day. The Club will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Please invite friends and family to come along to enjoy coffee and scones and, if they wish, to try out the green.
Everyone is welcome and I look forward to seeing you and your friends there.
Best wishes to everyone playing for the rest of the season and I hope to meet up with you at the various end-of-season events.

Apologies to Frank Sinatra:
… a retrospective by Ron McBride
The season’s end is near And so we face the final curtain My friends, we’ll say it clear We’ll state our case, of which we’re certain
We’ve bowled a season full And travelled each and every highway But more, much more than this We did it our way
Regrets, we’ve had a few But then again, too few to mention We did what we had to do And saw it through without exemption
We bowled so many rinks Each different green along the highway And more, much more than this We did it our way
Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew When we bit off more than we could chew But through it all, when there was doubt We ate it up and spat it out
We faced it all and we stood tall And did it our way
We’ve loved, we’ve laughed and cried We’ve had our fill, our share of losing
And now, at season’s end We find it all so amusing
To think we did all that And may I say, not in a shy way Oh no, oh no, not we We did it our way
I am so grateful to the executive committee for supporting my plan to have a President’s Day ‘with a difference’ this season. As a club we are combining the day with a Fund Raiser for my designated charity, the Alzheimer’s Society.
Outlined below is the timetable of events for Saturday 7th September:
COFFEE ZONE: From 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon we will be serving coffee and scones in the McQuay Pavilion. This is a chance to invite family and friends and all other section members from within CIYMS to come along, try out the green (flat sole shoes please, bowls provided) and enjoy a coffee with us.
REFRESHMENTS:12.15 p.m. to 1.45 p.m. Second bowling session for family friends and members. Sandwiches will be served in the McQuay Pavilion during this session.
The morning will be quite informal. Play for a while, then relax and have a coffee. Someone will be on each rink to give some structure to the play and offer assistance to any newcomers.
FORMAL TOURNAMENT: 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. for all pre signed-up playing members.
Throughout the day, a collection box will be on site to accept all donations towards Alzheimer’s research. It would be my hope that as a club, with the help of our friends, we could raise £1000 for this worthy cause. As a gesture the club together with one of our sponsors, Regatta Ltd, will be covering the cost of the evening meal for members and guests, therefore every penny donatedbefore and during the day will go to the charity. As a guideline we are suggesting a minimum donation of £10 and I would encourage everyone to spread the word far and wide so our friends and families can support this effort by our club.
Please set some time aside on Sat morning 7th Sept and join us for coffee and take the chance to get on the green with family and friends. Please come and be assured of a warm welcome. Let’s make the day a great success and let us ALL play our part in supporting this charity which is working so hard to achieve a breakthrough for a disease that knows no boundaries.
